You are right I wrote non-compliant when what I really meant was unacceptable response to compliant input.

This is all turning on subtle distinctions of language.

Perhaps we can agree that if a printer gracefully ignores italics and prints out plain text then it is compatible but not compliant. But iff a pprinter pproduces text like this when italics are used on then it is non-comppliant, incomppatible and just pplain old ffaulty?

My conclusion from this engaging conversation is anyway that a) it's best to send note off instead of zero velocity note on messages because the risk outweighs the benefit and b) on receiving a zero velocity note on message one should definitely interpret it as a note off otherwise you'll end up with either hanging notes or a mysterious loss of polyphony.
