Alaska

Memorymode is based upon one of the very best-sounding polyphonic programmable analog synthesizers of the 80s, the legendary Memorymoog synthesizer.

Alaska

Post by huggermugger »

There's a patch called Alaska 2021 that I'm pretty sure is an homage to Eddie Jobson's gorgeous synth break on the first album by prog group UK, released in 1978. I think Jobson was using the Yamaha CS80 though. Memorymode does a really nice job. The key to this gorgeous effect is polyphonic portamento.

I think your right, sounds very similar to that track. U.K. were a great band.

I'm always psyched when I see posts that reference U.K. and ELP sounds!

I loved the Soundcloud clip!

From the useless trivia department, the UK tune you covered in your clip is from By The Light Of Day. Jobson did use a CS-80 and I'm sure he used the CS-80 ribbon controller while he held the chord stationary, in order to achieve the polyphonic portamento effect. And you helped sell a Cherry Audio product because I'm picking up this synth for this effect alone!
