Convert preset paterns to user paterns for tweaking and using in song mode

Is there a way to convert preset patterns to user patterns for further editing and use in song mode?
How are they assigned to a specific pattern number in song mode?
I have had no luck with this at all.
The only way I can create a song is using all preset patterns (which the user guide says can’t be done?)

Any help greatly appreciated!
